In Prayer

This project is about the inner mind, shown in the connection between two symbolic figures in an open landscape and various individuals in indoor environments. The figures outside symbolize these individuals through both their emotional expressions and through the spiritual meanings of being alone, warmed by light, or covered in shadows. The figures’ presence in this physical landscape— characterized by sunlight, wind, trees— reflects humanity in the spiritual realm, and both figures portray honest interactions with God.

Though surrounded by man-made walls, mirrors and artificial lights, the individuals in the indoor settings have taken a moment in time to isolate themselves and stand deep in thought. They are inseparable from the realities of the symbolic figures.

The project was inspired by Catholic imagery, pastoral landscape paintings and cinematic styles of Terrence Malick and Emmanuel Lubezki, namely in the 2011 film “The Tree of Life”. As the project came into being, the Bible verse Matthew 5:8 served as a guide: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
